Day #11,020: It’s been decided- we’re heading to Switzerland!!
Somehow the stars aligned, and Mr. M & I managed a few free days around the 4th of July holiday. After an evening spent scouring kayak.com and considering destination after destination (at some point that night we were sure we’d be going to Amsterdam… then Portugal… then Iceland… which- hence the links- we’ve managed to get to since), our compass point stuck. We were able to find decently priced last-minute flights to Switzerland!
I am ridiculously excited. I’m picturing scenic train rides through the Swiss Alps, hikes along mountaintop meadows filled with edelweiss (a la Sound of Music… yes, I do know that was Austria, but let a girl dream), and lots and lots of cheesy fondue. Bring it.
Here’s my basic itinerary:
Day 1: Zurich
Day 2: Lucerne
Day 3: Zermatt and the Matterhorn
Days 4-5: The Bernese Oberland & visiting Jungfraujoch, the highest rail station in the world
Day 6: The Medieval City of Bern
While we’re in Switzerland (beginning around the 4th of July), I’ll do my best to stay current with daily posts… assuming local internet can keep up with me!
So what do y’all think? Has anyone been to Switzerland? Is there anything we absolutely must see/ do/ eat/ experience?

How fun! And wow, you got a trip like that scheduled less than a month before departure. That never happens for us. I was in Switzerland years back and it was one of the most beautiful places I have been too. We were only there for a few days though, but still amazing!
I'm so glad to hear you loved your Swiss trip... if humanly possible, that makes me even more excited to go! Every picture I've seen looks like it's out of a fairy tale... gorgeous. As for the scheduling, oh how you overestimate me, rejoicefortheday! ;) I've only got the bare-bones itinerary down, so if you've got any suggestions, I'd love em!
So sorry to read this after the fact! But if you ever go back, Southern Switzerland has an unusual charm. Locarno, on Lake Maggiore, is very resort-y, palm trees and all! Walking distance away is Ascona, much more like the Switzerland you experienced. Go the first week in August, when the Locarno film festival is held. It's a hoot, with an a-ma-zing megascreen in the piazza where international films have their European debut every night at 9 to an audience of 5,000 (not counting SRO). The ramp-up to 9pm is like waiting for Tinkerbell to descend at Disneyland.
We would've loved to spend more time in Southern Switzerland! And considering how much we enjoyed the rest of the country, fingers are crossed that we'll be back. Thanks for the future travel suggestions! Now to work on Mr. M...
